Story : A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from an adrift rowboat.

After spending four harrowing years at war, Tom returns to Australia and takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the western coast. Scarred by the war experience, he yearns for solitude and no human contact whatsoever. The picturesque island soothes his mind and Isabel's love awakens his soul.
They find solace in each other but the happiness is short-lived as their several attempts to start a family fail. As fate would have it, their prayers get answered when they stumble upon a rowboat adrift at sea, carrying a dead body and a crying baby girl. They rescue her and on Isabel's request, decide to pass her off as their own but Tom fails to silence his conscience, especially after he encounters the baby's biological mother (Rachel Weisz). Can he conceal the truth?
