As a subject, honour killing has been the focus of several Bollywood films where it was used mostly as a sub-plot. Only recently have our filmmakers started exploring it in depth. In films like ‘Sairat’ and ‘NH10’, we actually got to see the mentality of families and individuals who commit such crimes. ‘G Kutta Se’ is set in that zone.
We see male chauvinism in action in an extended family living in a Haryana village. While the eldest member of the family, Vijender (Rajveer Singh), can stand up to his own friends and stop them from perpetuating a gang-rape, he doesn’t hesitate for a moment before judging his own sisters.
He regrets his actions later, but the nature of his society is such that he can only brood over his crimes and do little else. His cousin Kiran (Neha Chauhan) is a headstrong girl, who is brave enough to love on her own terms, and braver still to prevent unwarranted, amorous advances of her lover (Nitin Pandit). Possibly strongest character in the film, how Kiran meets her fate, is a very dark yet interesting angle in the plot. The youngest daughter in the family, Diksha (Vibha Tyagi), ends up being the victim of an MMS scandal. Hers could have been the most hair-raising plot arc, which would have been more effective had the makers not treated her story like a cliché.
