Biography : Aamir was first introduced as a child artiste in the 1970's hit Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) - he was the youngest child in the trio. He then concentrated on school and became a state tennis champion for Maharashtra. Aamir fell in love with the girl next door in the meantime. He proposed to her the day he turned 21, and she accepted. But apparently, there was opposition since she was from a Hindu family and he, from a devout Islamic one. So, they eloped, got married and returned to their homes. Aamir's wife Reena even appears in the song "Papa Kehte Hain". His performance in Earth (1998) as the Ice-Candy man has received rave reviews from Indian and international critics. | In 1995, Aamir stopped attending the Filmfare Awards. Many think he gave up since he had been nominated numerous times from 1988-95 and never won once, but it was really because Aamir began to think Filmfare was biased and rigged. He felt that they were toying with him by purposely not winning him any awards, and that they were biased against him in favor of actors like Shah Rukh Khan, who was sweeping awards back then even though he was a newcomer. He felt he should have won the Best Actor award for his films Rangeela (1995), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991). He also thought Filmfare was rude by not even nominating him for his other acclaimed works Dil (1990), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993). So, in the end, he just gave up. |
| Him and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan are arch-rivals. They have never done a film together even though they both have been offered many opportunities to do so. In 2007, Shah Rukh Khan mocked Aamir for his choosiness in films and not attending the Filmfare Awards, and after that, Aamir went on to say that Shah Rukh is "the name of my dog who licks my feet". This caused them to avoid each other for bit, but they patched up in 2013. However, they have been competing and taking digs at each other since 1995, when Aamir stopped attending Filmfare Awards. |
